Aloes

Aloe Plicatilis

Slow growing tree-like succulent gradually forming a small 'woody' trunk (to 1.5m in ten years) The grey-green leaves are arranged in a fan shape, hence the common name "Fan Aloe" A spring flowering Aloe, producing abundant scarlet flowers, Aloe plicatilis is a stunning feature/accent plant in the garden. It grows equally well in a pot. "Drought-proof" this plant does best in full sun with good drainage. Raise the bed if in heavy clay soils. Will tolerate light frosts.

Aloe polyphylla - The Spiral Aloe

A most unusual plant having soft succulent grey/green leaves arranged in a unique spiral pattern. A mature plant can achieve 1m across, though I have never seen one quite that big! An eye-catching feature plant that grows equally well in a pot. Aloe polyphylla will tolerate dry periods, however, with regular watering it will perform better and avoid 'dry leaf tips' In it's native habitat, the mountain regions of South Africa, the spiral Aloe receives over 1,000mm of rainfall. This plant is classed as 'vulnerable' in nature. Able to tolerate frost, a must for any succulent collection!

Advanced polyphylla

Advanced Spider Aloe
Aloe x spinosissima SPIDER ALOE

A stunning small growing Aloe with the most beautiful spikes of bright red flowers in late winter. This Aloe flowers at a young age and multiplies to form an attractive clump. Totally drought proof this plant makes a stunning display when planted 'en masse' or in drifts. The 'Spider Aloe' looks dangerous but like many Aloes it is soft to the touch. This plant like it's more well known cousin Aloe vera, also has medicinal properties.

Aloe mitriformis / Aloe perfoliata GOLD TOOTHED ALOE

A 'creeping' Aloe that when young forms a small clump. The attractive deep green of the leaves contrasts well against the deep red flowers, which appear usually at the end of summer. The leaves have soft 'teeth' white when young turning to gold then brown. This Aloe is happy growing in dry shade, but will do equally well in full sunwhere it will develop an attractive red tinge (sunburn?) to the leaves. An easy plant to grow it is a must for any succulent collector. Grow in pots or the garden!

Advanced Aloe mitriformis

Aloe ferox-The Candelabra

Known as 'Cape Aloes' in it's medicinal form this plant has been used for centuries as a purgative or to improve digestion. It also makes a stunning garden specimen growing to 2m+ In early spring the 'candelabra-like' spikes of bright red flowers put on a show. Native to the Cape Region of South Africa this plant is well suited to growing in Southern Australia and should be more widely grown. This sensational accent plant needs no supplementary watering.

Advanced Aloe ferox

Aloe striata hybrid

With soft smooth leaves this beautiful rosette forming Aloe is perfect for gardens with kids and nosey pets. Growing to 400mm high and wide and sending up spikes of masses of flowers in reds and oranges this is a spectacular plant for pot or garden. Easy to grow under a variety of conditions from tropical to arid. Drought proof this plant does not require supplementary watering.

Aloe arborescens

Tough as nails plant often found growing in large clumps under cypress trees around old farms. Wonderful as a screening plant it will eventually form an impenetrable barrier. The soft succulent leaves are full of the healing gel more commonly known in Aloe vera. Growing to 2m in full sun to full shade an established plant produces masses of red flowers in winter. A must have plant to fill a spot in the garden where nothing else will grow!

Advanced Aloe aborescens

Crassulas

Crassula falcata - The Propella Plant

A slow growing member of the 'Jade Family' this stunning and hardy plant grows into clumps up to 1m across. The leaves are dramatically shaped to resemble an aeroplane propeller. As if this feature was not enough! You just wait until this plant flowers! What a stunner! A massive head of bright red flowers is your reward, late spring through summer (even the dark brown dry flower heads make an interesting feature through winter) Totally drought proof this plant prefers a sunny spot in a well drained position with protection from frost. The propeller plant also makes a striking pot plant.

Flowering Crassula falcata

Cordyline albertii

Cordylines are everywhere at the moment but not all of the new 'cultivars' are good, suffering heat/cold stress. Cordyline albertii is an old variegated form of the cabbage tree from New Zealand, an oldy but a goody! Stunning cream and variegated foliage with a red blush at the base, make this plant one of the most spectacular accent plants around. Unaffected by the extreme heat we had last summer (unlike the newer dark leaved Cordylines which burnt badly) Albertii likes a sunny spot where it can "show off". A regular water in dry periods will keep this plant growing well. An absolute must in any landscape, makes a great statement grown in a pot also!

Advanced Cordyline albertii

Yucca recurvifolia WEEPING YUCCA

A small growing Yucca to 1.5m Yucca recurvifolia has soft, spineless, arching blue/green foliage. Totally unaffected by the extreme heat of last summer this is a great accent plant for a hot dry spot. A graceful plant with beautiful creamy-white edible bell-shaped flowers. Adds a dramatic softness to succulent gardens or mixed borders and makes a stunning, hardy pot plant. Should need no supplamentary watering once established....drought proof!

Advanced Weeping Yucca

Yucca recurvifolia -Banana split"

"NEW!" One of the soft-leaved Yuccas, this new cultivar adds a stunning splash of colour and texture to your garden. A 'clump-forming' Yucca "Banana Split" grows to 0.5m. The leaves have an eye-catching golden yello centre, making this plant a great accent plant for pots or gardens. Plant in drifts for a spectacular display! When flowering expect beautiful creamy-white bell-shaped flowers on a 1m spike in summer. Drought proof! A tough plant for hot spots (PROTECTED UNDER PBR-PLANT BREEDERS RIGHTS)

Beschorneria yuccoides

Lovely soft accent plant (no pointy sharp tips here!) that will grow to 1m by 1m. The grey/green leaves have a soft arching habit forming a clumping rosette. Large pinky/red bell shape flowers appear high above the foliage in spring/summer. This plant will flower all the better the more it is neglected. Keep it hungry and on the dry side for best flowering! Very drought tolerant, the Mexican Lily prefers a well drained sunny position.
